winning at the online dating game
We all know the dating game has changed drastically. But do we know how to deal with the new dating landscape, overcome our fears and hesitation, and play the game to win? I met the man who would become my husband online. So, add me to your list of online dating success stories. Here’s how to make yourself next on the list:
1) Pick a time in your life when you’re relatively content in other areas.
You need to be able to roll with the punches and deal with the rollercoaster of emotions that inevitably come with dating. Dealing with the recent death of a loved one, loss of a job, or a breakup? Probably not the best time. Wait until things have calmed a bit to take the online dating plunge.
2) Set realistic goals.
Not everyone meets his or her future spouse online. But that doesn’t necessarily amount to failure. This is about you and your personal growth. What do you want to accomplish for yourself independent of whether you end up in a relationship? Maybe your goal is to meet two new people a week or to try online dating for six months. If nothing else, online dating will improve your conversational skills so that you can make a great impression when you do meet that special someone.
3) Make your dealbreakers clear but be flexible about the rest.
Use your online dating profile to your advantage. If you know you want kids, make that clear to save yourself some time and heartache. On the other hand, if you’re not sure whether you could be in a relationship with a vegetarian, why not be open to the possibility?
4) Give it a real chance.
It took a few painfully awkward dates with other guys to get to the first one with my husband. So expect to invest some time and experience a little disappointment along the way. Or hey, you could be one of the fortunate few like my husband who met his future spouse on his first online date. Only one way to find out, right?
5) Keep your sense of humor.
Above all, don’t take it too seriously. Your online dating stories could make you a hit at your next party.
