If you were away from home and injured in such a way that you were unable to talk to first responders how would they quickly locate your family? That’s always been a problem—until now. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is offering a new program that allows you to enter emergency contact information into a secure database accessible only to law enforcement and emergency personnel. In addition to the peace of mind of knowing your family will know of the situation, being able to quickly contact a family member could save your life if you have any special medical needs.

Go to www.dmv.state.pa.us and click on “Emergency Contact Information” button on the right side of the screen. You will be directed to enter your Pennsylvania driver’s license number, the last four digits of your social security number and your date of birth. You can then enter information for two emergency contacts. That information can be changed at any time by reentering the site. Once you’ve registered your information, emergency responders can access the system provided, of course, you have your driver’s license with you.

“It’s a good way to assist us in an emergency when you can’t communicate,” says Mt. Lebanon Police Cpl. James Hughes. “It saves time and a lot of effort.”
