I saw an interesting post regarding the holidays and how we all use it as an excuse to gain a few pounds. I say “excuse” because many people just succumb to “It’s the holidays…I’ll get back on track after the new year.”
However, no matter what holiday you are celebrating it’s just an average of two weekends between Thanksgiving and the New Year.
Just imagine if you didn’t gain that holiday hump and started your New Years health resolution (or revolution as my daughter says) now. If we didn’t gain that five to 10 pounds over the holidays every year we would be that much closer to our health goals and not feel bloated and defeated after the celebrations are over.

There are many tips out there but here are some of my own:
- Watch the alcohol intake. Those yummy holiday drinks, though they may not be filling, are packed with calories and sugar.
- Many parties are loaded with “finger food.” Make a plate and stick to it. Don’t just pick for hours while you are at a gathering unless it’s the veggie tray.
- If you know you are going to party on the weekend really be strict during the week. Put your holiday cookies in the freezer out of sight and bring them out for guests only.
- Limit your baking. I have done this for the past couple of years and it works great. Make your favorites but no one needs dozens of every type of cookie. This will also give you more quality time with your families.
- Make time for your fitness routine. No fancy equipment is needed. Start your day 30 minutes earlier and get your workout in.
The debate is still out there on whether people gain one pound or 10 pounds over the holidays but take that number and multiply it by 10 years and see how easy it is to gain at least 10 pounds a decade.
Don’t wait until the new year to start to achieve your healthiest you.
Happy & Healthy Holidays!
