COATS Mt. Lebanon public safety organizations are collecting is collecting winter coats, hats, scarves and other outerwear, from November 1 to December 17. Collection bins are located in the public safety center, 555 Washington Road, and at Medical Rescue Team South Authority headquarters, 315 Cypress Way.

TOYS  The Marine Corps Reserve will be collecting for its Toys for Tots program. Bring new, unwrapped toys to Medical Rescue Team South Authority headquarters, 315 Cypress Way.

BOOKS Box up your book-club books and recent bestsellers and take them to local care facilities. Also, the Mt. Lebanon Public Library is accepting donations for its Book Cellar used book shop. Bring your donations to the lower level of the library.  Place your donations on the red cart. The Book Cellar cannot accept LP albums, encyclopedia sets, textbooks older than five years, VHS and cassette tapes or magazines older than the current issues.

Finally, remember the library for Give Big Pittsburgh, Tuesday, November 30. Formerly called Day of Giving, Give Big Pittsburgh raises money for local nonprofits through a single online donation platform. www.givebigpittsburgh.com

Volunteer

St. Clair Health has a variety of volunteer opportunities, ranging from patient escort to working in the gift shop. Volunteers staff the hospital’s surgical center, greeting patients and family, recording insurance information and taking care of clerical duties. Other opportunities include delivering internal mail within the hospital, visiting patients and coordinating clergy visits, and staffing the surgical family waiting room and the welcome center. Family Hospice and Palliative Care has been providing comfort care to patients with life-limiting illness and their families since 1980. Services are available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, in a variety of settings, including private homes, personal care and nursing homes, hospitals and the Family Hospice Inpatient Center in Lawrenceville.

Volunteer opportunities include patient and family companionship, assisting in fundraising efforts, clerical tasks and bereavement support. All patient volunteers receive training and orientation. South Hills Interfaith Movement (SHIM) is looking for volunteers to help with after-school programs, homework help and youth mentoring. Other programs needing volunteers are CheckMates, which involves making weekly check-up calls to seniors who live alone; Community Closet, sorting and processing clothing donations; drivers for trucks and cargo vans; and help with SHIM’s early childhood program and its food pantry.
