The municipality and the Mt. Lebanon School District will partner in an Arbor Day observance beginning at 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 26, at Foster Elementary School. The event will include student poetry and music, remarks by Foster principal Jason Ramsey and Mt. Lebanon Commissioner Anne Swager Wilson, followed by the reading of a Tree City proclamation and a tree planting on school grounds. Mt. Lebanon has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA since 2007, and the Arbor Day celebration is one of the requirements for maintaining that status.

Mt. Lebanon celebrates Earth Day, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m, Sunday, April 28, in Mt. Lebanon Main Park. The event will feature environmentally friendly businesses, artisans, nonprofits, environmental action groups, the Mt. Lebanon High School Environmental Club and members of Mt. Lebanon’s Environmental Sustainability Board. Presentations include opportunities for alternative and renewable energy, electrification and electric vehicles, ways to save energy at home, food, music, a visit from the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department, children’s activities, healthy soil information, air quality, water quality and energy efficiency.

A GREAT SUMMER JOB The Mt. Lebanon Recreation Department is hiring lifeguards for the swim season, which begins on May 25. Lifeguards are required to have child abuse clearances—which can take a few weeks to obtain—certification in first aid and CPR, and must pass the American Red Cross lifeguard training course. DISABILITY SUMMIT State Rep. Dan Miller will host the 11th annual Disability and Mental Health Summit, at Beth El Congregation, Thursday and Friday, April 18 and 19. New this year is the Festiv-All, a celebration of art and music from members of the disability and mental health community, from 4 to 6 p.m., on April 18. Programs are scheduled from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, and from 9 to 3 on Friday. Attendees can register for a free 15-minute consultation with a special education lawyer. Continuing education credits are available for teachers and attorneys, with credits pending approval for social workers and rehabilitation counselors. PERFECT SCORE A couple of years ago, we wrote about the glass collection dumpsters at Village Square Mall, a joint partnership among Mt. Lebanon, Dormont, Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair. Although glass is once again included in our recycling contract, studies showed that glass recovered in a single stream yielded up to eight times the amount of usable glass collected with other materials.

Don’t believe us? We have proof.  Last year, we sent more than 110 tons of glass to CAP Glass, a Westmoreland County recycling center, and the center was able to successfully recover all of it.

Chris Koontz, CAP’s director of operations wrote: “The 110.08 tons sent to us …  has consistently shown a residue rate of less than 1 percent due to the lack of contamination in material loads. CAP Glass has been able to successfully recover 100 percent of the applicant’s mixed glass recyclables for manufacturing markets because of this 0 percent residue rate.”
