WELCOME TO OUT INTERNS Mt. Lebanon Magazine’s summer interns are both homegrown products. Anna Mares graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School last year and was the editor in chief of the Devil’s Advocate during the second semester of her senior year. Mares attends Wheaton College outside of Chicago, where she pursues a bachelor’s degree in international relations and English writing. She works as features editor at the Wheaton Record and tutors elementary school refugees with World Relief Chicagoland. Mares lives on Forestview Drive, and she loves spending time with her
family. In her spare time, she enjoys thrifting, reading and exploring Pittsburgh with her mom. Kate Kessler is a 2022 Mt. Lebanon High School graduate and editor in chief of the Devil’s Advocate in the first semester of her senior year. Kessler attends American University in Washington, D.C. where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in journalism and music. She writes for American Way of Life (AWOL) magazine and WVAU radio web staff at American University and will act as an assistant editor for AWOL next semester. She lives with her family on Longridge Drive.
WINNING WRITING AND PHOTOGRAPHY Mt. Lebanon Magazine garnered 12 nominations and three awards at the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania’s Golden Quills journalism competition. Hive Action, by Anne Caffee, won a Quill for best traditional feature and also received the Ray Sprigle Award for best magazine writing overall, marking the first time
Mt. Lebanon Magazine received that recognition. Photographer John Altdorfer took the prize for best photo in a personality photo, with his photo of milkman Jeff Brunton in the magazine series Uncommon Labor.

HOUSE TOUR Howard Hanna’s Mt. Lebanon office is planning a tour of several Mt. Lebanon homes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, September 23. Tickets for the tour, which benefits the Howard Hanna Free Care Fund, are $100 and go on sale Tuesday, August 1, and includes all homes and some light appetizers at the office at 701 Washington Road. FIRST NATIONAL BANK is opening a new branch at 315 Cochran Road. The bank will be located in the space formerly occupied by the now-demolished Dollar General Store. First National Bank is developing the front half of the property, closest to Cochran Road, for a retail banking location. The rear half of the property will be converted to green space until a development plan is submitted for that area.
