ROCKIN’ ROLLED Rolled ice cream, a longtime street-food favorite in southeast Asia, has made its way to Washington Road. 15° Fahrenheit Rolled Ice Cream, 654 Washington Road, chills and rolls the ice cream while you watch. The liquid is chilled to -15 and spread onto a flat surface, where the prep staff uses small paddles to form the ice cream into rolls, about the size of a roll of quarters, Flavors include Banana-Tella (Nutella, banana and Nilla wafers), green tea and strawberry, Thai tea and lychee, among others. Restauranteurs Brian Dougherty and Frank Tokach survived the construction phase and are ready to welcome guests to RedWood Café in the revamped former CC’s space.

REDWOOD ON WASHINGTON Frank Tokach, co-owner of RedWood Café, 698 Washington Road in the former CC’s location has clear goals for himself and co-owner Brian Dougherty: “We just want to have fun, cook and provide food to everybody.”

Tokach, a Pennsylvania Culinary Institute graduate who has been a chef for more than 20 years, has experience in many places, from high-end steakhouses to country clubs to ethnic foods, says “I can do it all.”

Tokach and Dougherty are the only employees in the small but mighty venue, which will serve rustic sandwiches and design-your-own salads in the fast-casual spot. Two dinner entrees will be available to take home each day. Unlike the make-at-home dinner services, these are complete and ready to eat, with no cleanup required, for between $12 and $14 each.

Fresh flavor is the prime goal, with nothing frozen and everything made from scratch, Tokach says. The menu will fluctuate based on what’s fresh and will hinge on what customers like—and what sells.

Sandwiches are a mainstay. A meatball hoagie: Tokach’s family recipe of meatballs on a fresh baguette, with several cheeses, peppers and fresh pomodoro sauce. A pork sandwich, a crab cake sandwich (“No filler—all crab,” Tokach promises) and roasted eggplant wraps for vegetarians, all in the $7 to $13 range, with most priced $10 to $11.

Build-your-own salads will offer two different choices of greens and as many fresh vegetables as you want for $6. The aforementioned crab cake, pork, turkey or other meat can be added for an additional charge.

Tokach says he’s been looking for a place to start a restaurant with Dougherty for about two years. It’s the first restaurant they’ve owned together. “The location is perfect, in the heart of Mt. Lebanon,” he says. “We just want to be where people can support us and we support them.”
