GET YOUR DANCING SHOES ON The Mt. Lebanon Partnership has announced the first two bands for its signature First Fridays. Held in Clearview Common the first Friday of June, July and August, the events always include a concert.
June 2 Rock to the Grievous Angels with Mt. Lebanon’s Stacy Innerst on drums, dishing out roots rock and soul.
July 7 Get ready for the rock/R&B/jazzy/bluesy sounds of Red Beans and Rice Combo, featuring Mt. Lebanon’s Wayno and Dave Klug on vocals/harmonica/ukelele and drums/percussion respectively, and Tom Roberts on keys.
Stay tuned for August’s lineup.
First Fridays are from 7 to 10 p.m. and are appropriate for the whole family. Admission is free. You’re invited to dine and shop along Washington Road, dance in Clearview Common, mingle with street performers and see neighbors you haven’t seen in months.
HALFWAY BETWEEN FARM & TABLE The WesBanco Farmers Market, on Washington Road Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., begins May 13. Shop a huge assortment of fresh veggies, breads, meats, sweets and other deliciousness. On the Second Saturday of each month, the market features live music. Vendors include Red Star Kombucha, Cinco de Mayo Salsa, Mediterra Bakehouse, Regent Park Naturals and Goodlife Juices, among many others. The Mt. Lebanon Lions Club Farmers Market, Wednesday afternoons in the parking lot of the Mt. Lebanon United Lutheran Church, 975 Washington Road, will open May 24, and feature Wood Street Bread, Logan Family Farms and Triple B Berry Farm and more.
BELLS WILL BE RINGING Sometime this summer, the Port Authority will install an audible crossing signal at the T crossing on Alfred Street. The signal was mandated by the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) as part of an upgrade to the intersection to improve safety. The project will also include pavement markings and upgraded signage.
The signal will ring for about 40 to 60 seconds each time a trolley passes by.
Public Works Director Rudy Sukal says the signal will be about 60 decibels, which according to the National Institutes of Health is comparable to ambient conversation in an office or restaurant.
MEMORIAL DAY CHANGE The traditional Memorial Day service at the Mt. Lebanon Veterans Memorial in the park is changing from an evening to a morning event on Monday, May 29.
This year’s service will start sometime before 9 a.m. It will be similar to past ceremonies, which featured patriotic music, a flag raising, brief speeches and recognition of Mt. Lebanon residents who gave their lives in the service of our country. The fire department will participate in dress uniform prior to joining the South Hills Memorial Day Parade, which starts in Brookline at 10 and ends at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery just before 11.
CELEBRATE EARTH DAY in Mt. Lebanon on Sunday, April 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Mt. Lebanon Park. The family-friendly event includes food, shopping, music, educational experiences and outdoor activities for people of all ages.
CALL FOR ARTISTS The Mt. Lebanon Artists’ Market, which will take over the Academy Avenue parking lot on Saturday, September 23, and Sunday, September 24, is looking for entries from artists who wish to participate. Artists working in wood, jewelry, sculpture, glass, ceramics, fiber, wearables, mixed media, leather, metal and 2-D art are encouraged to apply. The sponsor of the event, the Mt. Lebanon Partnership, is offering cash awards and housing for artists from outside of the area.
Artists must pay application and booth fees but keep all proceeds from the sale of their work. The Partnership will donate all proceeds from the event to benefit art initiatives in Mt. Lebanon.

FREE INCOME TAX HELP: The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is available through April 15 to help taxpayers who earn less than $52,000. No appointments necessary. For help, go to the Bible Chapel, 300 Gallery Drive in McMurray, (five miles past South Hills Village) Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Taxpayers can receive assistance with federal, state and local wage tax returns and real estate/rent rebate and PACE applications. Please bring: W-2s, all 1099s, (interest and dividend statements, social security and pension statements), totals of itemized deductions (medical, taxes, charitable) and social security cards for you, your spouse and dependents. Also bring copies of last year’s federal and state tax returns, real estate tax receipts and receipts for large purchases such as cars. For direct deposit of refund, have your bank account and routing numbers. Bring proof of identification for yourself and your spouse.
