Play at the Uptown Block Party!

UPTOWN BLOCK PARTY Don’t play games with me unless it’s at Mt. Lebanon’s Uptown Block Party on Saturday, September 10, presented by the Mt. Lebanon Partnership. And playing games is only one of the many fun aspects of the outdoor party. Commercial Districts Manager Eric Milliron is busy nailing down event details, such as the band, but expect a huge party, similar in size and scope to ULTRAparty, with a live band, beer for sale to those over 21, restaurants, food trucks and lots of people on Washington Road, which will be closed to vehicles. A skate park will be set up for boarding in the street and local nonprofits will operate the games to help raise funds for their groups. Live size Jenga? Yeah. They’ll have that. The event will benefit Accessible Lebo, a nonprofit that strives to make Mt. Lebanon a great place for people of all abilities. In fact, proceeds from last year’s block party are going to buy an accessible water fountain for Clearview Common. This year’s item hasn’t yet been selected. The hours have not yet been set, but keep your calendar open for a late afternoon to early evening start. There’s no admission but a $5 donation will buy you a wristband that will allow you to purchase beer. For developments as they happen, like Mt. YAAA! Our Facebook post about Totopo’s soft opening reached 8,723 people, got 252 likes and 54 shares. When we first broke the news of Totopo coming to town, we reached 972,565 people, got 1.6 million likes and 467,508 shares. OK, that part may not be completely true, but it’s pretty safe to say people are excited about Totopo coming here. Seriously, we could just post a picture of their table-made guacamole and write “Table-made guac! Yaaa!!!!” then go pour a cup of coffee and when we get back there would be at least 50 likes and 25 people who post “Yaaa!!!” So if you haven’t been to Totopo yet, you’re probably the only person in town who hasn’t. Get up there. It’s good stuff.

GET IN, GET OUT, GET GORGEOUS That’s the motto of the new Fluhme Glam Bar, 607 Washington Road, and with her blond hair, perfect makeup and wearing a sleek black maxi dress, owner Tiffany Fluhme is the epitome of glam. Growing up in Uniontown, Fluhme modeled part time. After graduating from Seton Hill University, where she majored in biology and physician assistant studies, she became a physician assistant in plastic and reconstructive surgery. That work sparked her entry into the business side of beauty; she launched her cosmetics line, Fluhme Beauty, in 2009 and opened the first Glam Bar in Warrendale in 2015; Mt. Lebanon will be her second location.

The Glam Bar will sell mid- to high-end luxury skin- and hair-care products, makeup and perfume, and also will offer stations for trendy express beauty services such as manicures, pedicures, eyelash extensions, blowouts,  spray tans and more.

In addition to services, the Glam Bar specializes in event hair and makeup, making it a “one stop shop for all things beauty and glam,” Fluhme says. She offers services for bridal parties in house and on location, as well as Princess Parties for younger clients.

Princess Parties offer mini manicures, pedicures, makeup and hairdos for kids’ events, such as birthday parties. And with seven elementary schools in Mt. Lebanon, Fluhme expects the parties will be a fun addition to the community. Teen “princesses” are welcome, too. “Girls from 5 to 18 really, we can cater it to the age and what they want to experience,” she says.

Fluhme lives in Fox Chapel with her husband, orthopedic surgeon Derrick Fluhme, and their sons, Milan, 7 and D’Angelo, 4. She plans to sponsor fund-raisers at the Glam Bar to  boost the Fluhme Foundation. Established by the Fluhmes in 2009, the foundation benefits seriously ill children and their families by donating things such as iPads or toys that will encourage hope and happiness.

The Glam Bar, furnished with stylish purple and silver decor, will have a fun, trendy, modern vibe.

“Uptown is a fabulous community from boutiques to restaurants to salons, spas,” says Fluhme, “This is an exciting concept to not only Mt. Lebanon but to Pittsburgh in general.”
