Mark your calendar and grab a costume for Totopo Cocina & Cantina’s inaugural Day of the Dead fundraiser, celebrating Mexican and Latin culture.

The event takes place at 660 Washington Road, from 8 p.m. to midnight, Thursday, October 20.

It features free food and drink samples, a DJ, mariachi band, salsa lessons, face painting and more, with proceeds directly benefiting the Pittsburgh Hispanic Development Corporation (PHDC).

PHDC helps promote Hispanic businesses.  Totopo owner Juan Grimaldo wanted to do something for them in return.

“It’s really just going to be a celebration of Mexican and Latin culture and a way to have an all around good time with all things Mexican and Latin,” said Totopo’s marketing manager, Brandon Lyle.

Guests are encouraged to wear Day of the Dead costumes, and best costume wins a prize.

Day of the Dead, or Día de Muertos in Spanish, is a centuries-old holiday celebrated in Mexico. On this festive occasion, Mexicans remember and honor their deceased loved ones by celebrating their lives.

Tickets for Totopo’s Day of the Dead Fundraiser cost $15 and can be purchased  online. Order soon. Limited tickets are available.
