Tomorrow, Nature Conservancy volunteers will be clearing English ivy in Bird Park beginning at 9 a.m. Bring gloves and a clear conviction that English Ivy’s gotta go.

The golf course will be open for play on Thanksgiving Day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting. The recreation center will be closed on Thanksgiving Day but will resume regular programming on Friday, November 23.

Last weekend in Cleveland, one of our tennis pros, Scott Kahler, and his partner Matt Riva, won a national platform tennis tournament. Scott and Matt are now ranked in the top 15 nationally in men’s open platform.

This week’s police department activity included: A 21-year-old man  arrested for DUI on Washington Road; a 29-year-old man arrested for public drunkenness, and a 28-year-old woman  for simple assault and public drunkenness on Alfred Street.; a 65-year-old man arrested for public drunkenness on McFarland Road.

A 52-year-old woman overdosed and was transported to St. Clair Hospital; a 43-year-old man received a mental health commitment to St. Clair Hospital; and one protection-from-abuse order was filed against a resident this week.

The fire department responded to 34 incidents this week. Three fire-related incidents, including assisting Bethel Park at an apartment fire in a seven-story building; a one-ton dump truck on fire on Lindendale Drive;  and an overheated light switch on Woodlawn Drive. The firefighter also responded to eight rescue and emergency medical calls, including two emergency medicals, five vehicle accidents with injuries, and the removal of an occupant from a stalled elevator at 400 Cochran Road.

Three staff members are in Missouri this week for the final inspection of the new pumper, which is expected to be in town  the week of November 26.

Crews continued the leaf collection program. Five trucks with vacuums as well as a crew using a backhoe, and three open dump trucks, removed 209 loads of leaves from the streets this past week bringing our annual total to 871 loads.
