The Way Back
The 1958 Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils football team rolled to a record of 8-0-1. Because of an obscure rule, the 13-13 tie against Uniontown prevented both teams from competing for the WPIAL title. Six seniors from that team received scholarships to Division I schools. Running back/defensive back Denny Phillips was an All-American, played at Notre Dame and signed a free agent contract with the Steelers, but never played for the team.
Front row, from left: Bud Vogel, Gene Breen, Howard Breining, Bill Sterner, Ed Doran, Art Ayres and Lee Wells.
Back row: Bob Marlarkey, Denny Phillips, Dan Driscoll, Dave Barone.
Thanks to David Driscoll for help in identifying the players and providing extra information.
