@ The Library

BOOK BROWSING ONLINE The Mt. Lebanon Public Library is working to develop a stronger reading community presence online. Check out the library’s Instagram feed to see posts that highlight titles from the new books display area. Join the library’s community group on Goodreads to discuss what you (and everyone else) are reading.  Plans are in the works for a winter get-together for the library’s various book groups and for a couple of salons where participants can share reading suggestions as well as make new book friends. Visit the library’s website [1] to find links to book reviews from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, the New York Times Book Review and the Washington Post, and book lists of new material, bestsellers, award winners, and staff picks.

BOOK BROWSING OFFLINE Next time you stop at the library, be sure to check out the new displays. In addition to the Book Stop, Media Stop and New Book sections, librarians are curating seasonal lists with more access to the listed books and to in-demand titles, and have started a book-to-movie display. In the works is an expansion of its book club display to include suggestions from celebrity readers such as Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, Jenna Bush Hager and Reese Witherspoon.

FERRET OUT FAKE NEWS The Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA) and PublicSource is presenting a series of Citizen Toolkit classes in libraries this fall. The workshops are made possible by a $250,000 grant to ACLA from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, focusing on civic literacy and engagement throughout Allegheny County.

At 3:30 p.m., Monday, October 21, Mt. Lebanon Public Library will host a fake news and information literacy workshop. The program, geared toward teens, examines how fake news is created and disseminated, and how to filter it out and find unbiased information online.

At 7 p.m., on Wednesday, October 23, Castle Shannon Library will host “The Power of the Pen: Getting Public Attention for Your Issues.” Learn about storytelling in the digital age and get tips from professionals for composing powerful narratives.
