The Last Taboo: Dying in America

Barbara Ivanko, president of Family Hospice in Mt. Lebanon, will discuss the attitudes about the end of life in the U.S. from the 1800s to today, questions people are afraid to ask and the resources available for families facing this difficult time in this three-part series.

Author Visit: Jack Hersch
7 p.m., Wednesday, June 19

Jack Hersch will discuss Death March Escape: The Remarkable Story of a Man Who Twice Escaped the Nazi Holocaust. The book tells the story of his father, Dave Hersch’s Holocaust experience. He spent 10 months in a concentration camp, escaped, was recaptured and escaped again.

Rose Exposition
11 a.m.- 3 p.m., Saturday June 15

Roses can be used in just about any garden design. Come see an exhibit of hundreds of roses from the Pittsburgh Rose Society members’ gardens. Rose experts will answer your questions and help you make sense of the vast variety of color, growth habits and bloom features offered by the rose family.

Speaker Gregg Swain, author of Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game, will discuss Mah Jongg culture around the world, how different cultures have shaped it, and the hold this game—the most popular game on Earth—has on its players. Gregg is an art enthusiast and Mah Jongg historian.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover
Friday, June 28

Drop off your stuffed animal at the children’s library between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Friday, June 28 for a library sleepover. Pick up your animal friend Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and enjoy the sleepover slideshow! One animal per child, please.

LIBRARY GARDEN WEEKEND Make a weekend of floral enjoyment and support the Mt. Lebanon Public Library at the same time. The Library Garden Tour, the centerpiece of the library’s fundraising efforts, is Sunday, July 14, from 11 to 4. On Saturday night, beginning at 7, enjoy a night under the stars at the pre-tour garden party. The library’s lovely garden is the setting for entertainment, desserts and drinks, but the party will move inside if it rains. Tickets are $30. Free admission for benefactors and patrons of the Mt. Lebanon Public Library Garden Tour.

Tickets for the tour will go on sale in June for $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the tour at the library. This self-guided tour will feature several diverse Mt. Lebanon gardens.
