Last Wednesday night, both the Pens’ playoff game and the Bucs game were chased off the screens at Walnut Grill because it was time to play the Familyyyy Feuuuud!!!

Patriarch Chris Buda and his four sons, Andrew, 23; J.T., 21; Mark, 18; and Trevor, 17, began their journey to the Feud’s Atlanta studios back in the fall of 2011, when Mark saw an ad for an open tryout at the Airport Marriott. More than 10,000 people showed up to take a shot at family fame.

“They told us they were just looking for people to have fun,” says Chris. “We didn’t get any of the answers right, but we had a lot of fun.”

For the maybe one or two of you who aren’t familiar with how this show works, it goes like this: Two teams of five family members square off to give answers to questions posed to a random group of people. Questions like “Name something you would do if you were a dog.” (An actual question). All of the popular answers to the questions, usually between four and eight, are on a board and your team gets points for answering correctly. First team to get to 200 points wins.

A few months after the audition, the Budas got a call from the producers of the show, asking if they would be available for a taping in July 2012. It finally aired last Wednesday, more than a year and a half after the visit to the Marriott.

The Buda family hosted a party at Walnut Grill for the occasion, which brought at least 50 of their friends and neighbors into the booths and tables to see how they fared. They were playing against the returning champion Fisher Family, who jumped out to an early lead because they seemed to have a better idea of what men would keep in a bra, if they wore one. The Budas were able to overcome a 123-point deficit with their ideas on what you would do if you were a dog (licking and sniffing were prominent in the answers) and all of a sudden it’s 136 to 123. In the end, though, the Fishers seemed to have a better handle on reasons why a guy wouldn’t ask a girl out on a date, and there went the match.

So what do you get for second place? Nada. However, Chris says, the show paid all the family’s expenses for two days in Atlanta, and they all had a great time with host Steve Harvey.

“He’s very personable,” Chris says, “And he entertained the audience. It was like getting a free comedy show.”
