In a story in last month’s issue (Heroes and Heroin [1]), Laura Pace Lilley wrote that Mt. Lebanon police officers used Narcan on eight opioid overdose victims. Since then that number has grown. Last year in Allegheny County, heroin claimed 206 lives, up from 157 the year before.
SAFE (Stop Addiction for Everyone) Lebo is a coalition of organizations and entities that have a stake in preventing drug abuse. Key sponsors are Mt. Lebanon Municipality, Mt. Lebanon Police Department, MRTSA, Mt. Lebanon School District, Mt. Lebanon City Council of PTAs, St. Clair Hospital and Pennsylvania American Water.
SAFE Lebo’s mission is to educate people about the dangers of drug abuse, particularly prescription drugs; share resources for getting help with addiction; and provide a year-round opportunity to dispose of unneeded prescription drugs.
SAFE Lebo secured funding from Pennsylvania American Water to install a prescription drug dropbox in the lower lobby of the Mt. Lebanon Public Safety Center. All drugs lodged in the dropbox are incinerated under the supervision of the Mt. Lebanon Police Department.
