st. clair has wigs for patients taking chemo

If you’re a woman living in the South Hills and you are losing your hair because of chemotherapy treatments, you can visit The Wig Salon in St. Clair Hospital and get a beautiful wig for free. The hospital has partnered with the American Cancer Society to help women manage cancer’s impact, says Georgianne Williams, the hospital’s director of volunteers. The private fitting area is in the Oncology Education Resource Center on the hospital’s fifth floor. Seven hospital volunteers in addition to Williams are trained to do the fitting. Patients can select from a variety of styles, colors and lengths to complement their features and skin tone.

The synthetic and human hair wigs would typically cost $350 to $1,000 and are not covered by medical insurance, but thanks to the program, women can get one even if they do not have insurance or a doctor’s referral. To make an appointment, call the 24-hour hotline at the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345. For specific questions about St. Clair’s program, call the hospital’s Volunteer Services Department at 412-942-2085.
