some wintertime reminders

TREE-CYCLE Place your Christmas trees at curbside for pickup and recycling by new contractor Republic Services on Saturdays, January 11 and 18. Put your tree at the  curb the night before either collection date. Trees may not be in plastic bags. All decorations, lights and  tinsel must be removed, as the trees will be recycled into wood chips, and any foreign material could damage the equipment.

You also may put your tree out on your regular trash day or drop it off at the public works facility on Lindendale Drive anytime prior to  January 18.

KEEP IT CLEAR Remember, when the snow starts falling, you have 24 hours after it stops to clear your sidewalks. This holds true for houses, apartments and even vacant buildings. Business owners must clear their sidewalks within four hours of accumulation between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays. If a walk is left untended, the police department will cite the responsible party. If the walk is not then shoveled, a subcontractor will perform the work and the municipality will bill the property owner. Absentee commercial property owners, people who go away for the winter or anyone who can’t or does not want to clear the sidewalk should contract with a snow removal firm. To report an unshoveled sidewalk, call 911. If you need help shoveling sidewalks due to illness, the high school has a small group of volunteers who may be able to help. Call the activities office at 412-344-2114.
