Safety Tips: Guns and Driving
GUN VIOLENCE impacts virtually every community in America, so it’s important to understand prevention and safety measures. People need to “recognize the responsibility they have as gun owners,” said Mt. Lebanon Police Chief Jason Haberman. “If you’re a safe gun owner — a responsible gun owner — then you can help prevent crime from occurring.”
Haberman shared some crucial safety precautions:
Keep your guns locked in a safe. You can invest in a gun-specific safe or one that uses fingerprint activation, so only you can access it.
Keep the locked guns in a high place, out of a child’s reach.
Complete appropriate training. Private companies offer gun training.
Never leave a gun in your car. If you’re taking it with you outside of the home, always keep it with you and have the proper permits. Criminals will look for guns in cars.
If you’re concerned about someone’s safety and they have access to a weapon, call 911.
Educate children on the dangers of firearms. If they see a gun, they must leave it alone and tell an adult.
PACE YOURSELF Use extra caution when driving in hard-to-see conditions. Stay a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.
