TIME TO DUMP THAT VCR Last year, Pennsylvania legislators passed the Covered Device Recycling Act. Covered devices are defined as “covered computer and television devices marketed and intended for use by consumers.” This includes keyboards, printers and any other device that connects to a computer or television. Although not specifically included in the state law, the ordinance Mt. Lebanon has enacted includes cell phones. These items can no longer be set out with regular trash or recycling. Any covered devices left out for trash or recycling pickup will be tagged unsuitable for pickup by Waste Management, Mt. Lebanon’s trash contractor, and you will have to remove them from the curb. Residents can bring unwanted electronic items to the public works yard, 1250 Lindendale Drive on the following Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: June 2, June 30, July 28, August 25 and September 29. There is no cost to residents for the service.
BATTERY RECYCLING Next time you need to stop in at the municipal building, bring along your used-up dry cell batteries and place them in the bin at the customer service center in the lobby for recycling. Household batteries, both rechargeable and non-rechargeable, such as D-cell, C-cell, AA, AAA, 9-volt and button cells will be accepted along with rechargeable battery packs from cell phones, cameras, laptop computers and power tools.
YARD WASTE REMOVAL Mt. Lebanon’s yard waste pickup program, piloted last year, was a hit and is going to return this year. On three Saturdays, May 12, June 16 and September 15, you can set out shrubs, tree branches and tree limbs with the leaves removed. To take advantage of this service, call the public works department before 4:30 p.m. the preceding Thursday (that’s May 10, June 14 and September 13). Place your material on the curb before 7 a.m. on the pickup day. The municipality does not charge residents a pickup fee. When preparing your material for pickup, follow these guidelines:
• Remove all dirt and debris from the roots of shrubs. Soil, rocks, leaves, grass clippings and ornamental grasses will not be picked up.
• Gather small branches into piles (not bound) not exceeding 24 inches in diameter and 48 inches in length.
• Large tree limbs should be no longer than 6 feet in length and no thicker than 5 inches in diameter.
• The total amount put out for any one pickup should not exceed more than can be placed into a single pickup truck.
Also, you can drop yard waste off at the Mt. Lebanon Golf Course on the first Saturday of the month from May through October between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Leaves in recyclable paper bags, small twigs, shrubs, brush and branches (under 3 feet) will be accepted. No grass clippings, stones, soil, stumps, large limbs or plastic bags.
Items that will be accepted include televisions, computer monitors, laptops, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, radios, telephones and cell phones, VCR and DVD players, appliance and car batteries, video games, household appliances and major appliances.
