ELECTRONIC RECYCLING Last year, Pennsylvania legislators passed the Covered Device Recycling Act. Covered devices are defined as “covered computer and television devices marketed and intended for use by consumers.” This includes keyboards, printers and any other device that connects to a computer or television. Although not specifically included in the state law, the ordinance Mt. Lebanon has enacted to comply with the act extends to include cell phones. These items can no longer be set out with regular trash or recycling. Any covered devices left out for trash or recycling pickup will be tagged unsuitable for pickup by Waste Management, Mt. Lebanon’s trash contractor, and must be removed from the curb. Residents can bring unwanted electronic items to the public works yard, 1250 Lindendale Drive on the following Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: April 28, June 2, June 30, July 28, August 25 and September 29. There is no cost for the service. Items that will be accepted at the free event include televisions, computer monitors, laptops, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, radios, telephones and cell phones, VCR and DVD players, appliance and car batteries, video games, household appliances and major appliances.
SHREDDING SATURDAYS Help prevent identity theft by bringing your confidential papers and documents to the public works yard at 1250 Lindendale Drive on Saturday, April 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Your items will be shredded before your eyes. Cost is $5 a box with the first box free. You may pay with cash or checks. Staples, paper clips and plastic binders do not need to be removed. Dates of future shredding events: June 9, July 14, August 11 and September 15.
LEAF AMNESTY The municipality is offering a free pardon to every fugitive leaf that turns itself in at the Mt. Lebanon Golf Course, Saturday, April 14 and 28, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Leaves can arrive loose or in a recyclable brown paper bag. Small twigs and bits of brush will also be pardoned, but no stones, soil, large limbs or plastic bags. Upon receiving amnesty, the leaves and their associates will be fed into a grinder and transformed into mulch for the greater good.
YARD WASTE REMOVAL Mt. Lebanon’s yard waste pickup program, piloted last year, was a hit and will be back this year. On three Saturdays, May 12, June 16 and September 15, you can set out shrubs, tree branches and tree limbs with the leaves removed. To take advantage of this free service, call the public works department before 4:30 p.m., the preceding Thursday (May 10, June 14 and September 13).
Place your material on the curb before 7 a.m. on pickup day. When preparing your material for pickup, follow these guidelines:
Remove all dirt and debris from the roots of shrubs. Soil, rocks, leaves, grass clippings and ornamental grasses will not be picked up.
Gather small branches into piles (not bound) not exceeding 24 inches in diameter and 48 inches in length.
Large tree limbs should be no longer than 6 feet in length and no thicker than 5 inches in diameter.
The total amount put out for pickup should not exceed more than can be placed into a single pickup truck.
Also, you can drop yard waste off at the Mt. Lebanon Golf Course on the first Saturday of the month from May through October between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Leaves in recyclable craft bags, small twigs, shrubs, brush and branches (under 3 feet) will accepted. No grass clippings, stones, soil, stumps, large limbs or plastic bags.
