In a time when outdoor activities are more important than ever, the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Department provides ample opportunities to stay active while enjoying some fresh air. The  department offers a golf course, swim center and tennis center in addition to indoor ice center and community center. Mt. Lebanon  also has playing fields, bocce courts, parks, playgrounds, volleyball courts and picnic pavilions. Over the past year, the recreation department  safely offered team and league play in multiple sports, plus fitness and wellness classes. When the pandemic subsides, they will continue offering special events, senior programs and summer camps. The department employs more than a hundred people, from regular staff to lifeguards to instructors, and coordinates several hundred volunteers.

BOOK ONLINE!

All of your recreation department needs—from booking pavilions to getting a pool pass to reserving a tee time—can now be serviced completely online. Visit www.mtlrec.activityreg.com to register for your recreation department activity.

COVID-19 & REC PROGRAMS

At the time this was written, the recreation department was offering limited-capacity fitness and sports classes, but its program lineup is usually far more robust—from special events, to cookie decorating classes to teen hangouts to art instruction. As restrictions change and programs begin to open up, you can get up-to-date information from the recreation department on the municipal webpage: www.mtlebanon.org/corona.

New This Year: PICKLEBALL

Did you know that USA Pickleball Association has a database that contains nearly 8,000 places to play in the U.S? This year, Mt. Lebanon will appear on the list, as the municipality will soon be adding lines for pickleball to some existing tennis courts—three in Williamsburg Park and two in Meadowcroft Park.

Please note: Two of the courts in Williamsburg Park have pickleball lines drawn perpendicular to the tennis lines. For those courts, players must bring their own nets, but the other three courts in the municipality allow for use of the tennis nets.

MT. LEBANON PARKS Our park system includes 200 acres across 15 parks and parklets, five ball fields, eight basketball courts, eight playgrounds, five picnic shelters, volleyball and tennis courts and hiking trails. The ice center is located in Mt. Lebanon Park, on the first floor of the Recreation building. The facility opened in 1977 and includes a regulation 200-by-85-foot main rink and a 60-by-80-foot studio rink. The facility offers a wide range of competitive, recreational and instructional opportunities. It was renovated in 2017 to replace both rink floors, refurbish the dasher boards, replace rubber skate flooring and paint the interior of the facility.

For now, Spring 2021, the rink is open at a limited capacity by appointment only. Visit www.mtlebanon.org for more information.

Located in the Recreation Center in Mt. Lebanon Park, the 50-meter outdoor Swim Center offers lap swimming, lessons, competition and recreational swimming for people of all ages. Home to Mt. Lebanon’s nationally known Aqua Club, the pool is the place to learn to swim or to watch elite swimmers compete in annual meets. It was completely renovated in 2014 with a new bathhouse, family changing rooms, pool heater, zero depth leisure pool, double slide tower, 50-meter lap lanes, poolside rock climbing wall, a snack bar and plenty of space for sunning on comfortable lounge chairs—however some of these amenities may be limited this year, so that the pool may safely open.

This year, the Recreation Department will be scheduling several swim sessions each operational day, with thorough cleaning and sanitizing between each session. They will have up to two 1-hour lap swim sessions per day, and two three-hour open swims each day. Sessions will have a limited number of swimmers—18 per lap swim and 300 per open swim to start (subject to change throughout the season).

You can purchase passes or choose to pay a daily swim rate. In order to attend either a lap swim or open session, you will need to make a reservation online. You will also be able to cancel your reservations online, but if you don’t show up for your reservation and you haven’t cancelled, fees will apply.

Swim passes should also be purchased online. They are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Visit www.mtlrec.activityreg.com to buy a swim pass, make a reservation and get updates.
