a roaring fire in a fireplace

FIREPLACE CONSULTATIONS Before lighting that first fire of the season, reach out to the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department for a fireplace consultation.

A trained member of the department staff will come to your home and make sure your equipment is safe, and if they find any problems, will recommend that you have a certified chimney sweep perform a thorough check. The fire department inspects between 80 and 100 residential fireplaces each year. To schedule your inspection, call 412-343-3402 or visit mtlebanon.org/fireplaceinspections.

DON’T PARK ON LEAVES As leaf collection season gets underway, watch out for piles of leaves that have been raked to the curb. Almost every year, Mt. Lebanon firefighters respond to at least one automobile fire caused by parking on a pile of leaves.

Kids dressed in halloween costumes at a door trick or treating asking for candy

HALLOWEEN Trick or Treat in Mt. Lebanon is on October 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. The Mt. Lebanon Police Department has some recommendations for everyone to stay safe.

Accompany your trick-or-treaters on their rounds if possible. Make sure they don’t run out in the middle of the street. Dress your kids in bright colors so drivers can see them. Make sure their costumes — especially if they include masks — don’t obstruct their view. Bring a flashlight.

SMOKE ALARMS The days of changing smoke alarm batteries twice a year are on the way out. Manufacturers are producing alarms with sealed, non-replaceable batteries that can last up to 10 years. It’s still a good idea to test your alarm every month, and if you need help installing or checking smoke alarms, the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department will send a firefighter to your home for a consultation. Call 412-343-3402 or visit the fire department’s “For Residents” section of mtlebanon.org/fire.
