STEPPING UP SAFETY Members of Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania Troop 71006 were recognized for their extraordinary leadership helping families better maneuver the Washington Elementary School Go-Zone, where parents drop off children. The fourth and fifth graders received the Bronze Award for their efforts. To help improve communication and eliminate safety issues, the girls created informative flyers for students, developed a series of videos on the Go-Zone location and procedures, created an updated map for use with incoming families, and designed friendly fliers to help remind residents not to park in the Go-Zone during school hours.

ROCK THE BLOCK WITH PUBLIC SAFETY Come meet Mt. Lebanon’s public safety personnel in a fun setting. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m. on August 12 at Markham Elementary School. There will be bounce houses, food, kids activities and, of course, police cars, fire trucks and ambulances to see.

CAR SHOW The Mt. Lebanon Police Department’s annual Classic Car Show is back for the 27th year on Sunday, July 9. The free, rain-or-shine event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the 600 and 700 blocks of Washington Road and includes classic cars, food, vendors and live music. The same day, the Mt. Lebanon Public Library, in coordination with the fire department, will host a Touch-a-Truck event from 9 a.m. to noon on Alfred Street. Stop by to see a police SWAT truck, ambulance, fire trucks and utility vehicles.

The Fourth of July means lots of celebrating. If you’re driving, be sure you’re paying attention to the roads. Don’t drink and drive. Never text while driving and always be prepared to stop at crosswalks.

CITIZENS FIRE ACADEMY Ever thought about joining the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department? Want to try it out before you sign up? That’s what the Citizens Fire Academy is for. The 10-week program runs September 13 through November 10. Most classes are on Wednesday evenings, with one Saturday class and a Friday evening recognition dinner.

Through classroom lectures, facility tours and demonstrations, participants learn about firefighting equipment and how to use it. The final class culminates in using everything learned to fight a real structure fire. For more information and to sign up, visit www.mtlebanon.org/fire.
