Progress on Castlegate Green

Castlegate Green, an affordable housing development at 101 Castlegate Court, is close to completion.

Vanessa Murphy, senior project manager at The Community Builders, said construction should be complete by April. Currently, four of the seven buildings are finished and have certificates of occupancy. Residents began moving into the property in December and will continue to move into the remaining buildings as construction concludes.

Public and private investments funded the $20 million construction of Castlegate Green. The community features mixed-income one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and townhouses. Several unique amenities include a community pantry, an open-air terrace, a “tot lot” for children, a community garden and a greenhouse. It’s all part of the Agrihood concept, a planned community where residents can grow their own food and live more sustainably.

Ian McMeans, Mt. Lebanon’s assistant manager and municipal planner, said the idea is “something we haven’t had before in Mt. Lebanon. It’ll be a benefit for the community.” He said the community is very walkable to the T, shopping, parks and other important assets, which is something Mt. Lebanon residents value.

Castlegate Green offers 51 units with designated leasing options. Rent for an affordable unit depends on household income, and rent for a market rate unit is based on comparable existing rates in the area. At the time of publication, applications are open for the market rate units and hearing/vision accessible affordable units. All other affordable units have a one-year waitlist.
