The next phase of Mt. Lebanon’s streetscape makeover is underway, with an aim to create more attractive public spaces along Washington Road. The good news is that, unlike Phase I, this phase does not involve major construction.

Activate Uptown will focus on placemaking, to make the main street more welcoming and accessible. Placemaking is an approach to urban design that prioritizes people over infrastructure, according to the Urban Design Lab. “Placemaking recognizes that public spaces play an essential role in the social and cultural life of communities, and that they are critical to creating a sense of place and identity.”

The $44,500 project received a $22,250 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

The project will focus on reimagining Uptown spaces, including Parse Way, Clearview Common, Clocktower Plaza and the stairway to the Mt. Lebanon light rail station. Under consideration are façade enhancements, street planters, public art installation and renovation of streets adjacent to Washington Road.

Planning firm Pashek+MTR, which completed the 2023 Comprehensive Plan and other projects for the municipality in recent years, will partner with Mt. Lebanon to develop Activate Uptown. The steering committee’s initial meeting was in May, and it is planning two public meetings to introduce the project and gather community input before the plan goes to the Commission for review and comment. As meeting information becomes available, it will be publicized on mtlebanon.org.
