PAT tunnel project

One side of the Mt. Lebanon T tunnel will close from 8 P.M. to 4:30 A.M. weeknights for the next 15 months, as Mosites Construction replaces electrical wiring and conduit for lighting, repairs the shot-crete tunnel liner, installs a new methane detection system and new handrails, upgrades the drainage system, and makes other repairs.

There will be no work from Saturdays at 7 P.M. through Mondays at 7 A.M. There should be no service disruptions during construction, says Greg O’Hare, PAT’s structures manager. Night work was planned and approved by Mt. Lebanon because fewer trains run after 8 P.M. A northbound train will simply wait for a minute while a southbound train uses the single lane, and vice versa.

All the night work will take place inside the tunnel so as not to bother residents. The bus pull-off lanes along Shady Drive will be fenced off and used for staging equipment and supplies. Work will begin on the inbound side of the tunnel around July 1. PAT has informed abutting residents of the specifics and the contractor will keep the police and fire departments updated.
