The 23rd annual Martha’s Run will take place at 9 a.m., Saturday,  April 13, at the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center. Children’s races begin at 10:15. Mt. Lebanon native Martha Dixon was an FBI agent who was killed in the line of duty. Martha’s Run has raised money for playground equipment and improvements all across the region, including Martha’s Playground, $50,000 worth of play equipment in Mt. Lebanon Park. Everitt Meer was named a Distinguished Finalist in the 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program sponsored by Prudential Financial, Inc., and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which honors young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. Meer, a sophomore at Mt. Lebanon High School, started the “Treasure Our Veterans” project, which has raised enough money to host more than 25 veterans breakfast clubs, community breakfast events focused on celebrating veterans and sharing their stories. Meer’s volunteer efforts include designing and selling T-shirts and lapel pins, creating informational flyers, giving speeches and designing thank-you cards for participating veterans. 

Seton LaSalle High School senior Faith Kisker was selected to participate in the Model G20 Youth Leadership Summit in Beijing. The event brings together high school students from more than 40 countries. Students are assigned to represent nations and negotiate agreements with other countries that benefit their own country and further diplomatic progress. Last year, Kisker participated in the Model G20 Summit in Boston at Harvard.

Temple Emanuel of the South Hills has named Rabbi Aaron Meyer as its next senior rabbi, effective July 1, replacing Rabbi Mark Joel Mahler, who retired last year. Meyer, an Erie native, served most recently as associate rabbi at Temple De Hirsch Sinai in Seattle for more than seven years. He is married to Rabbi Emily Meyer and they have two children, Evelyn, 3, and Eli, 5 months. He holds a master of arts in Hebrew letters/literature from Hebrew Union College, where he received his rabbinic ordination.
