“There is a real passion for gardening on our street,” says Jacque Speed, organizer of the Main-Line II Garden Club, which currently has 15 members ranging from middle-aged to 91 years old, one of whom is a certified Master Gardener. The club was founded in 2014 to help beautify the cul-de-sac on Lancaster Avenue in the Main-Line II plan of homes.
Since then, the landscaping in the cul-de-sac has changed drastically—color-coordinated flowers replaced old shrubs, seasonal decorations rotate throughout the year and blossoms are timed to be constantly changing from season-to-season—thanks, in part, to a master plan created by club member David Hughes in early 2016.
The club is privately funded by the members, some of whom make frequent trips to farms, nurseries and Amish auctions to acquire plants for the club, while others dig up their own perennials and donate them to the garden. The members also host First Friday gatherings in the cul-de-sac for Main-Line II from June through September. “Anyone in our community is welcome to join,” says Speed. “It’s just a nice way for people who have similar interests in Main-Line to come together and beautify the neighborhood.”
Mt. Lebanon native Ashley Hlebinsky has been recognized by the Professional Outdoor Media Association and the National Shooting Sports Foundation with the Grits Gresham Shooting Sports Communicator Award. Hlebinsky, curator for the Cody Firearms Museum of the Buffalo Bill Center for the West in Cody, Wyoming, is the first woman to receive the award. She is also the first female curator of the museum. “Her knowledge of firearms and the firearms industry is extraordinary, as well as her command of the delicate issues surrounding firearms use in our country,” says Bruce Eldredge, the center’s executive director and CEO.
Kristen Whitney and Katie O’Brien have joined Mt. Lebanon Dermatology. Whitney is a board-certified dermatologist and a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, Women’s Dermatologic Society, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. She graduated with honors from the University of Dayton with a bachelor of science in biology and obtained her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is on staff at St. Clair Hospital.
O’Brien, a physician assistant, has been specializing in dermatology for the past five years. Her undergraduate degree is from Penn State, and she has a masters of physician assistant studies from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. O’Brien is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants, and the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants.

Debbie Gundersen, Hazel Drive, and her daughter, Megan McPherson of Canonsburg, are new LuLaRoe fashion retailers. LuLaRoe [2], specializes in stylish, comfortable, affordable clothing. The pair is marketing the line through in-home parties and pop-up Facebook events.
Gunderson was raised in Pittsburgh but lived and taught school for many years in Virginia. Even though most of her friends retired and moved South, she was thrilled to ”retire” to Mt. Lebanon with her husband, Steve, fairly close to their daughter, who married a Pittsburgh native, and within walking distance of her sister, Jackie Funt, who lives on Lebanon Avenue.
Gunderson likes all the LuLaRoe fashions but says a favorite of hers and of many women are the very comfy leggings.
