Mt. Lebanon High School Fashion Club will host a fashion show at 7 p.m., Friday, May 15, in the high school’s skywalk. This year’s show, This Is Our 15 Minutes, incorporates Pittsburgh’s own Andy Warhol in theme and clothing. Fashion Club members will be showcasing styling techniques and designs they created in the club; as well as modeling spring and summer clothing from Mt. Lebanon boutiques—Jezebel, Koolkat Designs and Ann Taylor. Alberta Modern Hair (Washington Road) will be doing the hair and makeup for the show. Tickets are $5, available at the door. Proceeds will be split between Best Buddies LEBO, a group that pairs special needs and regular education students, and the Mike Riemer Transplant Fund (see page 61 for more information).

Mt. Lebanon High School senior Haley Silverman and junior Kathleen Mackey are 2015 Student Keystone Press award winners for their stories in the school newspaper, The Devil’s Advocate.

Mackey’s story “Local Project Helps Nation’s Heroes,” about the Wounded Warrior Project, earned first place. Silverman’s profile, “Junior Battles Cancer; Still Smiles,” about a student with cancer, won second place.

English teacher Dawn Begor is the newspaper’s sponsor.

Attorney David A. Scotti, Westover Road, has formed a new law firm, the Law Offices of David A. Scotti, P.C., located in the Manor Oak II Building on Cochran Road. The firm will focus its practice in the areas of construction law, complex commercial litigation, construction contracts and project counseling.

Scotti has more than 30 years experience in all areas of construction law. He has been elected to a three-year term on the Governing Committee of the ABA Forum on Construction Law; a group of approximately 6,000 construction lawyers. Scotti previously served as Chairman of the Contract Documents Division of the ABA Forum. He was named a 2015 Pennsylvania Super Lawyer in Construction Litigation.

Marie Erickson, Forest Glen Drive, received a Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor the scouts offer. Erickson, a member of Girl Scout Troop 51023, received the honor for creating a program that encourages high school students to serve as mentors for children involved in Art Expression, a non-profit after-school program that encourages development of children’s social skills through art. Erickson’s mentor program, which took most of a year to complete, includes a guidebook and video for new mentors. High school mentors dedicate their time at after-school sessions, talk to students, give feedback on art projects and serve as role models. Erickson served as a mentor at Mellon Middle School and extended the program to Jefferson Middle School. A Mt. Lebanon High School senior, Erickson plans to pursue a degree in education and become a teacher.

Vladyslav Makarenko, an eighth grader at Mellon Middle School, won the English as a Second Language Luminari Award scholarship, a merit-based $1,200 trip to a camp this June. Makarenko also won a $500 educational grant for Mellon.

The seven-day camp, called “I Want to be an Ambassador!” takes place at the Heinz History Center and includes a three-day trip to Washington, D.C. During the camp, students learn how to use diplomacy. Campers come from a range of geographic, socio-economic, cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds.

Makarenko, originally from Ukraine, was nominated by his teacher, Charlene Byrd, and won the award for demonstrating “motivation, open-mindedness and the willingness to learn,” in addition to “excellent personal and academic qualities,” according to Luminari, the Pittsburgh-based organization giving the award. The competition was open to all students, grades 7 to 11, in the Pittsburgh area.

At Mt. Lebanon, a student receives ESL services after indicating he or she speaks another language and test results indicate the need.

Caroline Grunewald, Mt. Lebanon High School Class of 2011 and Hamilton College Class of 2015, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Germany. A comparative literature major at Hamilton, in Clinton, New York, Grunewald studied abroad at Universität Tübingen, in Tübingen, Germany, in 2014.

A Dean’s List student, Grunewald is a teaching assistant in Hamilton’s German Department. While studying in Germany Grunewald volunteered as an English teaching assistant at a German primary. She also served as a research and editorial assistant in the Hamilton’s Comparative Literature Department.

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) Program, an element of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, places U.S. students as English teaching assistants in schools or universities overseas. ETAs may also do individual study or research.

Parkridge Lane resident Emily Heim was promoted to community outreach and program manager at Outreach Teen & Family Services, 666 Washington Road. Previously, Heim had been youth program manager. Heim has been with Outreach for 10 years and also is a therapist there.

Congratulations to PIAA wrestling champion Kellan Stout. Stout, a senior who concluded his high school career with a 138-18 record, holds the Lebo record for career wins, surpassing previous record holder (and Olympic gold medal winner) Kurt Angle last year.

“During the state tournament this year, he was the only wrestler in AAA and AA who was unscored upon,” says Kellan’s coach, Bill Lewis. “He did not give up a single point… he outscored his competition 27-0.”

The son of Bryan and Jennifer Stout, Kellan was born into a wrestling family. His father was a state high school champ in New Jersey and also was Clarion University’s only four-time NCAA Division 1 All-America wrestler. His two younger brothers also wrestle—Luke at Mellon Middle School and Mac with the Mt. Lebanon Youth Wrestling Association.

An honor roll student, Kellan has been recognized by the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association for state all-academic honors. He will continue his wresting and academic careers next year at Penn State under head coach Cael Sanders, a former Olympic gold medalist. Penn State has won the national title the past four out of five years and is considered one of the top programs in the country, Lewis says.
