THE JESSIE GAMES Jessie Egan Smith of Mt. Lebanon died in 2013, way too young. A Seton LaSalle graduate who attended Duquesne University, Smith was competitive, had compassion and always helped children in need. In that spirit, her friends and family organized the Jessie Games, now in its sixth year, at a new location: Cool Springs Sports Complex, 1530 Hamilton Road, in Bethel Park on Saturday, July 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. All proceeds benefit Catholic Charities, specifically its Roller Coasters program, a six-week counseling course that helps children cope with trauma. It also supports the Back to School program, which provides shoes and clothes for families in need.

To date, the Jessie Games has raised more than $135,000.

Tickets are $45 per family or $10 a person, and include all events, games, kids’ T-shirts for those 16 and younger and a picnic meal at the end of the event.

CELEBRATE CHAMPIONS Salute Mt. Lebanon’s spectacular athletes at the third annual Hall of Champions Celebration on Saturday, September 28, at Cefalo’s in Carnegie. The Hall will induct new student athletes who have exemplary sporting records in Western Pennsylvania, the state or country. The Hall also will give out the Distinguished Blue Devil award, for alumni athletes, coaches and athletic contributors who have gone above and beyond in supporting Mt. Lebanon athletes or have excelled in their sport after graduation. Ticket information will be online as soon as it’s available and will be listed in our September issue.

MORE MARKET For a town of Mt. Lebanon’s size to have its own farmers market is a great thing. That we’ve had two, is amazing: The Uptown Market, presented by the Mt. Lebanon Partnership on Washington Road from 9 to noon on Saturdays through October 26 and the Mt. Lebanon Farmers Market, run by the Lions International at Mt. Lebanon United Lutheran Church parking lot, 975 Washington Road, Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. until the end of October.

Now, we have a third market to love. Constance Zotis and Dena Galie of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, across from The Galleria, have started Holy Cross Farmers Market, Mondays from 4 to 7 p.m. through. October 28 (except Memorial Day and Labor Day).

With this market, the selection varies each week to keep you coming back. Zotis reports she has more than 30 total vendors, with an average of 16 each week and 14 kinds of food trucks with two stopping by each week.

“What sets us apart from markets in the area is that many of our Holy Cross parishioners’ businesses will be showcased as weekly vendors,” such as Mediterra Bakehouse, Gluten Free by Kassiani, Liokareas Oils, Petros & Co. (Nicholas Coffee and Tea Co.) and visiting parishioner businesses such as Relex Soaps, Bloom and Vines and Christian W. Klay Winery.
