TOP GEAR The Mt. Lebanon Police Department has 15 officers who are certified by the International Police Mountain Bike Association. The 40-hour Police Cyclist Course covers maintenance and repairs, clothing and personal protective equipment, patrol equipment, procedures and techniques, night cycling, firearms training, hazards and crashes. It includes scenarios such as pursuit of an armed felon, a burglary in progress, dealing with an emotionally disturbed person and traffic and suspicious persons stops.

In addition to four mountain bikes, this year, the department has acquired two electric bicycles—bikes equipped with a Bosch CX motor drive. The bikes make climbing our region’s up-and-down streets a lot easier, and can reach a top speed of 35 mph, making for some surprised looks from drivers who just blew past a stop sign. Extras include a rear rack, rear trunk bag with expandable panniers, NiteRider lighting kit, lights and siren and reflective vinyl graphics. The bikes, with the add-ons, retail for $4,499, but Adam Solar Rides, the vendor, provided Mt. Lebanon with a police discount and we were able to purchase two bikes at $2,500 a piece.
