Congratulations to Shawn Winter, who recorded the first hole-in-one for 2012 this week. Shawn used a 9 iron to ace the 163-yard hole while playing in the Drevitch league last Thursday.

In other recreation news, golf course manager David Boal has become a certified US Golf Association handicapper. This means starting on Monday, you can come to the course and receive your official USGA handicap. The service, which will cost a player $25 per year, is a system that allows players of any skill level to compete against each other on a level playing field. The tennis center opened for the season on May 1 with nine courts. Public works crews have completed spring aeration and reseeding on all municipal and school district athletic turf grass areas. All of the fields are ready for whatever summer has to throw at them.

Mt. Lebanon is planning a Plein Air painting event in October. More information about the event will appear in the upcoming issue of the magazine. This week, Prudential Real Estate donated $2,500 for sponsorship of the event.

First Fridays, the once-a-month summer street festivals, will begin again in June. PNC Bank and PNC Investments has renewed its sponsorship of First Fridays.

The police department reports that Saturday’s drug take-back day was very successful; 396 pounds of drugs were received at the Mt. Lebanon site. Mt. Lebanon was one of 121 sites in Pittsburgh that netted 10,400 pounds of drugs. The next take-back day event will be held in September.

Arrests this week include A 55-year-old woman and her 51-year-old husband for simple assault on Barth Avenue. Also, an 18-year-old Firwood Drive resident was arrested on Robb Hollow Road for possession of drug paraphernalia; a 35-year-old Pittsburgh man was arrested for burglary, resisting arrest, prowling, public drunkenness, and possession of marijuana on Questend Avenue; a 26-year-old Bethel Park man and a 38-year-old Washington man who were arrested in separate incidents for DUI on Washington Road; and a party on Sleepy Hollow Road that resulted in various charges for furnishing alcohol to minors, possession of marijuana, resisting arrest, and underage drinking.

The fire department responded to 30 incidents this week, including a cooking fire at the Twin Towers that filled an apartment and fourth-floor hallway with smoke, and a passenger vehicle fire in the parking lot of the post office on Castle Shannon Boulevard. The firefighters answered six rescue and emergency medical calls, most notably a rescue from a stalled elevator at the Abbeyville Apartments; three hazardous condition calls, three service calls and six false alarms.
