SOME FACTS AND FIGURES FROM THE WEEK

The February meeting of the planning board has been cancelled.

The latest library newsletter reports that in 2011, the Book Cellar made more than $72,000 for the library. This figure does not include proceeds raised from events but just what was earned selling used books. The Brews for a Chili Night fundraiser raised more than $6,000 for the library.

The public works department responded to two  emergency sanitary sewer problems:

On Morrison Drive a crew found a partially obstructed manhole. The downstream sanitary segment was flushed, and full flow was restored. On Robb Hollow Road, a property owner experienced a sewer backup in the basement. The cause of the backup was determined to be a sag in the private lateral from the home. The municipal main line was clear, and flows were normal.

There were 67 seniors who attended the recreation department’s senior luncheon and movie on Tuesday. Harmony Hospice sponsored the event.

A new session of youth tennis clinics got underway on Tuesday, with 129 kids registered. The volleyball program for girls in grades 5 through 8 started yesterday; 56 girls registered for the program.

Police made four DUI arrests this week: a 22-year-old man on Washington Road, a 24-year-old man on Bower Hill Road, a 29-year-old woman was arrested for DUI on Bower Hill Road and a 46-year-old woman on Castle Shannon Boulevard, who was also cited for driving with a suspended license.

A 27-year-old man was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia and damage to unattended property on McCully Street.

One protection from abuse order was filed this week against a Mt. Lebanon resident.

Fire Department Platoon Chief Chris Buttlar is attending the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency quarterly training in Pittsburgh, and Lieutenant Chris Switala is attending a Chemistry of Hazardous Materials class at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Lieutenant Loren Hughes received his National Pro Board Fire Inspector III Certification this last week at the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute.

The fire department responded to 18 incidents this week, including a microwave fire on Lakemont Drive caused when an older resident placed a heating pad in the microwave for 13 minutes instead of 1:30; four rescue and emergency medical calls, including the removal of an occupant from a stalled elevator; two hazardous condition calls, four service calls and four false alarms.
