The Mt. Lebanon High School Student Council has selected five Mt. Lebanon graduates to receive this year’s Great Alumni Award. The award, in its 14th year, is given to Mt. Lebanon graduates who have gone on to excel in their professions, have demonstrated a strong commitment to public service or have significantly improved the lives of others. The awardees were honored at a luncheon on October 5, and at the football game that night.

This year’s Great Alumni are:

Dale Cable, Class of 1975 Cable is a founding member of the Mt. Lebanon Basketball Association and a longtime coach. He has also served on the boards of the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devil Club, the Mt. Lebanon Youth Sports Alliance, the Mt. Lebanon High School’s Hall of Champions, and the Mr. Lebanon Parks Advisory and Sports Advisory boards. An attorney, Cable has established a practice in the area of workers compensation law and is a recipient of the Allegheny County Bar Association’s Distinguished Service Award.

Noelle Calabro Conover, Class of 1978
David is the chief technologist for Additive Manufacturing at Ansys, a mechanical computer-aided engineering software development company. He serves as a board member at the University of Pittsburgh School of Computing and Information Sciences and on the board of the Swanson School of Engineering at Syracuse University.

Noelle is the project coordinator for the SurvivorConnect program in the Hematology/Oncology Division of UPMC Children’s Hospital Pittsburgh. She advocates for resources and educates cancer survivors and their families. She also serves on the Executive Board of Our Clubhouse,

the Robert Morris University Nursing Advisory Board, and on committees for the Pittsburgh Foundation, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, and the UPMC Children’s Hospital

Pittsburgh Cancer and Blood Disorders Auxiliary. After experiencing the loss of their son, Matt, to leukemia, the Conovers created a program to empower the next generation of engineers, mathematicians, and artists through hands on, experiential learning. This program, Matt’s Maker Space, has been donated to the Mt. Lebanon School District and is in place at all of the School District’s elementary schools. The program is also in operation at Mt. Lebanon Public Library, St. Paul’s Episcopal Nursery School, and UPMC Children’s Hospital Pittsburgh. The Conovers plan to expand Matt’s Maker Space to other sites in the future.

John Haller, Class of 1952 Dr. Haller is professor emeritus of history and medical humanities and emeritus vice president of academic affairs at southern IIlinois University. He is the author of 25 books on topics such as American alternative healing methods and battlefield medicine, and nine true crime novels. He has also worked to preserve sites of historic significance in Cairo, Illinois. In 2003, he wrote and published a family history, The Mt. Lebanon Hallers.

Shirley Hanson, Class of 1954 Hanson is a conservator of historic buildings and sites in eastern Pennsylvania, particularly the Chestnut Hill and Springfield Township communities in Montgomery County. She directed the efforts in establishing Chestnut Hill as the nation’s first accredited urban land trust, established that community’s Task Force on Youth School Coalition against alcohol and drugs, and co-founded the Springfield Township Historical Society.
