The Mt. Lebanon School District came into legal existence in July of 1912, the same year Mt. Lebanon was incorporated. The school district was considered a fourth-class district, since the population was under 5,000, which meant it was to have a five-member school board. The school housing consisted of a six-room frame building at the corner of Washington Road and Cedar Boulevard, and a one-room frame building at Beadling Road.
Today, Mt. Lebanon School District consists of 10 schools—seven elementary, two middle and one high school—and serves more than 5,500 students. It also employs nearly 450 teachers and 220 staff members and a nine-member school board.
It is an award-winning school district committed to excellence in education. The high school and Lincoln Elementary School are both three-time winners of the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Schools award and Washington Elementary School has received one Blue Ribbon. Mt. Lebanon School District ranked No. 4 in the county and No. 7 in the state. Mt. Lebanon schools have ranked among the top four schools on the list since it was first published in 2005.
NAMM’s Best 100 Communities for Music Education 2018 acknowledges schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support for music education as part of the core curriculum
U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School for the high school’s innovative efforts to implement and teach sustainability measures.
The National School Boards Association listed Mt. Lebanon among the top digital school districts in the nation in 2017. Ranked No. 1 in the country in the mid-sized student population category of 3,000 to 12,000 students, Mt. Lebanon was also the only school district in Pennsylvania in the national ranking.
The Association of School Business Officials International has awarded Mt. Lebanon School District its Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for more than 30 consecutive years for excellence in financial reporting and accountability for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report and has chosen the district for the Meritorious Budget Award for more than 25 years in a row.
The district ranked second out of the 604 ranked in the state by the school district rating site School Digger in 2019, and 15th in the country, first in the region and third in the state by Niche this year.
