The Mt. Lebanon Public Library has been a community gathering place ever since its days on the top floor of the municipal building, where it opened in 1932. Although there hasn’t been much gathering in the past year, the library has still managed to play an active role in the community.
In addition to answering 2,386 reference questions last year, and averaging 350 contact-free pickups of library materials per week, the library extended its free Wi-Fi from inside the building to a few feet beyond the exterior, for public use during the times the building was closed to the public. From March 14, 2020, to the end of the year, 14,954 patrons attended virtual programs and library staff produced about 300 videos.
As we await a return to pre-pandemic conditions, the library remains ready to provide materials, programs and events in whatever form they are able.
IMPROVEMENTS TO THE BUILDING
The library has a new Learning Lab space. The space can be used for fiber and fine arts classes, adult computer classes, teen computer lab and tech projects and more. The space is currently not in use because of pandemic conditions, but check www.mtlebanonlibrary.org for up-to-date information.
Other necessary building upgrades include a new roof and replacement of old carpeting on the stairs with rubber stair treads.
DIGITAL MEDIA
A Mt. Lebanon Public Library card allows you free access to digital magazines, online music, e-books, webcasts and on-demand video. New to digital media? You can also receive instructions on how to use electronic devices. Other digital resources include Axis 360, an electronic book and audio provider; Gale, an online learning platform; Acorn TV, a video streaming service offering British television programs; and the online arts and crafts workshop Creativebug.
