Operating from the public safety center, 555 Washington Road, the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department is composed of 18 paid fire officers, 45 volunteer firefighters, a secretary and a data entry clerk. On average, the department responds to approximately five calls a day and more than 1,000 fire prevention activities a year.

The department is one of fewer than 300 fire agencies in the U.S. and Canada to receive accreditation from the  Commission on Fire Accreditation International, and one of fewer than 400 to have an ISO Class 1 rating.

FIRE PREVENTION DIVISION

School Program
The fire department teams up with the Mt. Lebanon School District for fire and life safety classes. The age-appropriate, comprehensive curriculum provides children with important lifelong safety lessons. Safe cooking classes, driver safety and Stop the Bleed programs are taught to middle and high school students. Visit www.mtlfd.org/kids-station to see what the kids are learning.

Fire Safety Consultations
Fire safety experts can help you make your home safer for your family. Firefighters tour the home to answer questions, make recommendations, help you craft a fire escape plan and check your electrical systems and fireplaces to ensure they are safe to use. In the last year, the department conducted more than 100 consultations. Recommendations for all residents include having a certified chimney sweep inspect your home and ensuring your home has a smoke detector on each floor and a carbon monoxide detector in each sleeping area of your home.

Volunteer
If you’re looking to serve the community, while challenging yourself physically and mentally and meet your new best friends, the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department is always looking for volunteers. Firefighters in Mt. Lebanon say the department has become their second family.

Citizens Fire Academy
Try on real fire gear and learn firsthand what it’s like to be a firefighter. The Mt. Lebanon, Fire Department offers a 10-week Citizens Fire Academy each year. Through classroom lectures, facility tours and demonstrations, participants learn about firefighting equipment and how to use it. The final class culminates in using everything learned to fight a real structure fire.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Building and fire codes The International Building Code and a customized version of the International Fire Code regulate all Mt. Lebanon buildings to help keep you safe. The International Fire Code regulates fire protection features in new construction, renovations and additions and requires maintenance of built-in fire protection features. The International Building and Fire Codes were developed from best practices, industry standards and historical events that resulted in large life or property loss. Mt. Lebanon Fire Inspectors are always out in the community ensuring buildings are up to code.

Alarm permits Residents are required to obtain a permit from the municipality before installing an alarm system.
