Despite a downpour, four pairs of mothers and daughters arrived at the Mt. Lebanon Public Library for the Girls Night Out monthly book club. Seated in a circle in the Children’s Story Room, discussion began at 7 p.m. on this month’s book, A Tangle of Knots by Lisa Graff. Librarian Connie Mathews conducts the library’s mother/daughter book club, offered for girls age nine to 13 and their mothers. The club meets in October and November, and again in January through April. Nine-year-old Mia Coriolan, who attends Howe School, says her favorite part of the club is getting to spend time with her mom.

Over the course of the hourlong meeting, Mathews asked a number of questions to help mothers and daughters understand the story’s theme. Questions ranged from which character was the most relatable to what quote best represented the moral of the story. A game often follows group discussion, encouraging the pairs to connect the book back to each other. Families take turns providing snacks that relate to the theme of the book.

Ann Bozick, whose daughter, Piper, attends Markham School, says that girls come from different schools across the Pittsburgh area to attend this club. Tricia and Leah Keen travel all the way from Forest Hills so that they can bond over 10-year-old Leah’s love of reading. Mathews says home-schooled girls have also joined throughout the club’s 15-year history.

Jennifer Thompson and her daughter, seventh grader Maddy, discovered the club from a PTA flyer at Jefferson Middle School.
