John and Sandy Murphy were at Uptown Coffee for a cup before going off to separate doctor appointments—Sandy had an eye appointment and John was seeing a podiatrist.

“That’s how it goes when you get old,” Sandy said with a smile. “Doctor appointments.”

When the couple rendezvoused after their respective appointments, John realized he was missing his wedding ring. A ring that cost $10 in 1961, when he married Sandy at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, which, as John recalled, “was just a Quonset Hut then.” A ring that has appreciated in value from $10 to priceless with the accumulation of 62 years of memories.

John retraced his steps, calling at the places he had been, but to no avail. The call to Uptown spurred a call to action on social media, and a few anxious hours later the staff was able to give the Murphys some welcome news.

“Anybody could have picked it up and got a lot of money for it,” said Sandy, “but someone found it on the street and brought it in.”
