PAINT-OUT! With the May sunshine, it’s time to get outside. There’s no better time to smell the fresh air than at the Plein Air Kids Paint-Out, May 21 in Uptown, presented by the Mt. Lebanon Partnership. The goal? Get outside and paint what you see during a timed contest.
Elementary- and middle school-aged kids of any artistic ability are encouraged to participate. Registration, which is just $5 to cover the cost of supplies, is only available online, at www.mtlebopartnership.org. Deadline to sign up is May 17 at midnight.
Check-in will be at 11 in the municipal building lobby, 710 Washington Road, with the Paint Out from noon to 2, outside, weather permitting. They aren’t having a rain date, but if the weather is bad, volunteers will give suggestions for places to go that are under cover.
Paintings will be on display from 2 to 3 p.m. and the awards ceremony starts at 3, with a total of nine awards in three age brackets. And yes, if you win, you must agree to loan your painting to the Partnership for display in the municipal building for a month. You won’t have your painting for a bit but you’ll be famous.
Gabi Hughes of the Western Pennsylvania Audubon Society will talk about local spring wildflowers at Spring in the Woods, 7 pm, Wednesday, May 11, at Mt. Lebanon Library. Follow up the lecture with a walk through the woods on Saturday, May 14, at Boyce-Mayview Park in Upper St. Clair. Meet at the Outdoor Classroom at 10 a.m. Call 412-531-1912 to register for the walk.

The South Hills Memorial Day Association’s parade, Monday, May 30, starts on Brookline Boulevard at 10 a.m. and reaches Mt. Lebanon just before 11 a.m. The parade ends at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, where a memorial ceremony follows. The parade is led by the Mt. Lebanon Police Department color guard and includes marching bands, fire trucks, Scout troops, twirlers and dance troupes and Shriners. On Memorial Day evening at 7 p.m., there will be a ceremony at the Mt. Lebanon Veterans Memorial at the entrance to Mt. Lebanon Park.
Breathe new life into your trinkets and treasures at Resin and Jewelry Repurposing, 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, at the Mt. Lebanon Library. Rescue your broken jewelry and single earrings from obscurity by turning them into new masterpieces with simple connection and basic beading techniques. Or bring small ephemera and mementos—anything from buttons to twigs (but no larger than a postage stamp)—to the class and learn how to preserve them in resin cabochons, which can also be turned into jewelry using basic jewelry techniques.
