Getting older can come not just with wisdom but also new challenges, many of them health-related. State Sen. Matt Smith will host his 8th annual senior fair to help seniors and their caretakers better navigate those waters, October 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can expect the same huge array of exhibitors and helpful information as past years, but in a new location: Beth El Congregation, 1900 Cochran Road.
The fair won’t just provide information to seniors; free health screenings and flu shots are available to attendees with a valid Medicare or insurance card. “In our digital age, events like this are still important for seniors who aren’t online. The Senior Fair is really a one-stop-shop for seniors to ask questions or provide their thoughts on issues in a safe and friendly atmosphere,” Smith says. Local, state, county and government offices will also send representatives to the fair.
Seniors and caregivers who attend will be eligible for giveaways and door prizes and light refreshments are provided. Attendees are asked to take advantage of the free shuttle service between Saints Simon and Jude Parish parking lot and Beth El Congregation. In past years, senior attendance has been estimated at 1,000, with more than a hundred exhibitors, and Smith and his team are expecting a comparable turnout this year, too.
“We’re in a new location, but seniors and caregivers will find organizations, agencies and businesses providing the helpful information and resources they have grown to expect in the eight years I’ve been able to offer this event,” says Smith.
