Lions market ready to roar

Finally, next week, the Mt. Lebanon Lions Farmers Market opens! The market, which runs from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, had to wait for school to be out so the vendors can get into parking lot that high school students temporarily have been using at Mt. Lebanon United Lutheran Church, 975 Washington Road. But my farmer friend Frank Zitibrosky, of Paul’s Apple Orchard, says the good news is that this season’s market will run all the way through October.Lions_Club_farmers_market2

For the past five years now, I’ve missed only a handful of nights at this market, where my almost 6-year-old son loves to get an Italian ice from the wonderful folks at La Scola’s and then meet and play with his friends in the grass of the church’s hilly yard. Always he’s able to snag several samples of fruit from Frank, who’s too generous that way.

My wife and I always enjoy visiting with Frank and several other vendors, who have become friends. In addition to the core lineup, the market is welcoming at least two new vendors: Heart of the Earth Granola and a new hot sauce and salsa vendor with the provocative name of Two Ugly Mugs.Lions_Club_Farmers_Market

Market organizer and Wood Street Bread Co. vendor Deanna Bartelme says they’re hoping to add “just the right vendor” for a third opening as well.

Get the full list and other details at the market’s website is http://www.mtlebanonlionsfarmersmarket.com. I’ll see you there, and at the Mt. Lebanon Uptown Farmers Market on Saturdays. How lucky we are to have two!
