Lincoln Elementary Crowned Fire Safety Champs
The competition was stiff, but Lincoln Elementary is the winner of this year’s Fire Safety Champion belt, awarded by the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department.
Each year, the district’s fifth-graders test their knowledge of the fire department’s safety lessons by taking a 50 question multiple choice test covering every lesson Lt. Kris Siegert teaches from kindergarten through fifth grade. The school with the highest average gets bragging rights and becomes keeper of the Fire Safety Champion belt for the remainder of the school year. Markham Elementary was this year’s defending champion.
“All 87 fifth grade students at Lincoln worked really hard on preparing for the fire safety test. I’m so happy for them because it shows that if you work hard and put the time in to study you’ll see positive results,” said Douglas Yannascoli, physical education teacher. He went on to say “Winning the belt is awesome, however, the education that our students receive during these lessons help them keep their home and family safe…. and there’s nothing more important than that!”
Ron Kitsko, Lincoln Elementary principal, is also pleased with the results. “I am so proud of our students’ efforts on this year’s fire safety test. Our health and physical education teacher, Mr. Yannascoli, challenged the students to bring home a win this year and they certainly delivered. Seeing our students’ reaction when the belt was presented to Mr. Yannascoli was just awesome!”
It was Lincoln’s first time winning the Fire Safety Champion belt.
“Our fourth grade students at Lincoln are excited to keep the fire safety belt here next year and they know that they have big shoes to fill,” Yannascoli said.
