Since we can download and browse books on  our phones, why would anyone need to go to a library ever again? Well, libraries were never simply about books. They are, and always have been, about information and imagination.

Sometimes that information and imagination is stored on ink-printed paper between two covers, or on ones and zeros on e-readers, but it also comes in the form of old family recipes passed on at a language conversation group picnic, original music kids create using borrowed instruments and library-owned music software, or tips from an expert on how to make your roses look their best.

Of Mt. Lebanon’s population of 33,137 (as of the latest census), 17,857 have active library cards. In 2019, the most recent reporting year, the library lent out 517,940 books, audiobooks, CDs, and DVDs and 180,211 eBooks, eVideo and eAudio materials, and hosted 2,211 programs—including author chats, history classes, book clubs, crafts and maker-spaces activities, board games and conversation groups—that brought in 43,899 people.

The public library provides assistance at the reference desk to patrons. If you can’t make it to the library, call 412-531-1912 during regular business hours and press 3, or text “Start” to 412-685-4004. You will receive instructions for use.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer opportunities include staffing the Book Cellar, the library’s used book store. Clerks handle money transactions, answers questions, and restock shelves. Sorters evaluate and sort book donations. All applicants must be 18 or older.

Volunteers are also needed to provide instruction for basic computer skills, software and programming languages, and to help keep the library stacks neat and orderly.

Volunteer gardeners help maintain the library gardens, courtyard and surrounding areas. They meet on Monday mornings from 9:30 to noon, April through November.

Readers’ Theater volunteers read from scripts as a group, performing for senior living facilities and other organizations throughout the South Hills area. Rehearsals and performances generally held in the early afternoon.
