Join other cinephiles this summer in Clearview Common (at the corner of Washington Road and Alfred Street) for Last Saturday Cinema—a series of free outdoor movie screenings. The Denis Theatre Foundation offer the film series as a way to raise awareness of its campaign renovate reopen the landmark as a movie theater as well as a social, cultural and business meeting place.

Movies begin at dusk. Following the movie, film writer and teacher Elaine Wertheim will lead a discussion at Il Pizzaiolo on Washington Road. “Clearview Common is a wonderful venue,” Wertheim says. “The sound is crisp, the images are great. It really works well.”  Wertheim organized the program with Christina Ambroselli, chair, and Conrad Waite. The committee chose the films to represent the type of movies the theater will show when it opens—documentaries, classics and independents.  Last year’s events drew more than 100 people to each screening. Here’s a rundown of what you’ll see:

June 30: Bottle Shock (2008) tells the story of the early days of California wine making and the 1976 blind wine tasting in Park—now known as the “Judgment of Paris”—that brought American wines respect thanks to a Chateau Montelena chardonnay with buttery notes and a Smithsonian finish. The movie stars Chris Pine, Alan Rickman and Dennis Farina and is rated PG-13.

July 28: Harvey (1950) Jimmy Stewart is Elwood P. Dowd, a mild-mannered, pleasant man, who just happens to have an invisible friend—a 6-foot-tall rabbit named Harvey. This beloved film is rated for a general audience.

August 25: In Lars and the Real Girl (2007) A delusional young guy strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet. Ryan Gosling stars in this charming PG-13 film.
