John-Henry Krueger had an exciting Olympics debut in PyeongChang, South Korea. He skated aggressively and won his heat in the men’s 1,500-meter race in short track speedskating.

Cameras caught his parents, Heidi and Bryan, celebrating in the stands and waving Terrible Towels.

Krueger, who learned how to skate at the Mt. Lebanon Ice Center, advanced to the semifinals, where things didn’t go as well.

He again was skating strong, but he got bumped wide, taking him out of contention to advance to the final. In fact, after that race he was issued a penalty.

South Korea’s Lim Hyo-Jun won the gold medal.

“At the end of the day, all I can do is learn from this and make myself stronger and smarter and smoother on the ice,” Krueger told TeamUSA.org.

“I’m going to have to accept this call and just make sure it doesn’t squash my confidence for the upcoming races. My Olympics is definitely not over.”

Krueger next is scheduled to skate Tuesday, in the men’s 1,000 and, most likely, the men’s 5,000 relay. Qualifying races in those events are Tuesday. NBCSN will air those races at 12:30 that afternoon.
