Destination Moon: Pittsburgh and the Apollo 11 Mission will be guest speaker Andy Masich’s topic at Historical Society of Mount Lebanon’s Wednesday, October 25, gala at St. Clair Country Club.  Masich, president and CEO of the Heinz History Center and a professor at Carnegie Mellon University will discuss the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum’s exhibit on the 1969 moon landing, which will travel to four cities, including Pittsburgh, where it will open in September 2018.

Masich will share stories not only about the “rock star” astronauts, but also about some of the unsung heroes of the mission, including unique contributions made by several Pittsburghers. He hopes guests at the fund-raiser, which will help fund the reconstruction and reopening of the history center at 200 Washington Road, will talk about where they were when Neil Armstrong took his “giant leap for mankind.”

The event will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails and ragtime music by Martin Spitznagel, followed by a buffet.  There will be a silent auction and a raffle, including the opportunity to bid on a week in a home at Folly Beach near Charleston, South Carolina.

A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the History Maker Award to several Mt. Lebanon residents who have made contributions to the community, their professions, the region, the state and the nation.

Berkshire Hathaway, headed by Tony Mete, is lead sponsor for the event and has provided help with invitations, programs and made it possible for the first 20 homeowners who qualify and respond to the invitation with payment to purchase a historic house medallion (provided their house is located in the National Register District) for only $114, half the regular cost.
