Every year, Mt. Lebanon High School recognizes several of its alumni who have worked to improve the lives of others, been involved with community service and/or have excelled professionally. Administrators, faculty, students and alumni serve on the selection committee. This year’s recipients were honored at a luncheon in the high school and at a halftime ceremony at the Mt. Lebanon-Penn Hills football game. This year’s distinguished alumni are:
Rev. Father John Chakos, Class of 1959
Chakos served for more than 35 years at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church on Gilkeson Road. He was a member of the Peace Corps in Brazil and currently, through Orthodox Charities, volunteers with the Mayan population in Guatemala for six months of the year.
Jack Daly, Class of 1984
While attending Case Western as an undergraduate, Daly organized the nonprofit Case Engineering Support Group. The members built equipment for occupational and physical therapists who worked with disabled adults and children at Cleveland hospitals that included Rainbow Babies & Childrens’. He currently volunteers at the Navy SEAL Foundation.
Gregg Gnipp, Class of 1986
As a Commander in the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service, Gnipp has helped to contain and diminish health crises in the United States and throughout the world, including aiding Hurricane Sandy victims and working to contain Ebola in Liberia.
Lawrence Lebowitz, Class of 1980
Lebowitz, an attorney and director of the law firm Cohen & Grigsby, has volunteered his time at Temple Emanuel, the United Way, the Economic Development Council of the Allegheny Conference, Cystic Fibrosis, and has assisted with career literacy for an African American youth program. In addition to his philanthropic work, Lebowitz has served on the Mt. Lebanon School Board since 2010 and is currently board president.
