JESSIE GAMES BENEFIT The third annual Jessie Games is Saturday, July 9 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at Seton-LaSalle High School, McNeilly Road, to benefit Lunches for Kids through Catholic Charities.
The festival has raised $55,000 in its first two years. Named for the late Jessie Egan Smith, a former Mt. Lebanon resident who died at age 23, the Jessie Games is an Olympic-themed day of races, games, a watermelon-eating contest and cookout food.
Individual tickets are $15 and family tickets are $50. Admission includes all food and activities. Kids 16 and younger get a free Jessie Games T-shirt. Register online at www.thejessiegames.org [1].
Catholic Charities Summer lunch program has provided nearly 3,000 free and nutritious meals to kids ages 18 and younger at the Susan Zubik Welcome Center in Downtown Pittsburgh. The 10-week program, which also includes creative activities such as singing, dancing and crafts, is entering its fourth year.
MISSION POSSIBLE Ask anyone Mt. Lebanon and the rest of the South Hills is affluent and no one needs financial assistance here. Some people might believe that, but congregation members at Mount Lebanon Evangelical Presbyterian Church found otherwise when they looked for a local service project to do back in 2008. Ever since then, the church’s Mission: POSSIBLE outreach focused on what they could do at home to help people in need. Nine years later, the service blitz they call “a backyard mission trip” is one of the church’s signature projects.
This year’s event is July 11 to 15, when more than 200 volunteers will help at the Brookline Boulevard food pantry, perform home repairs, choir performances at nursing homes, garden, collect school supplies, toiletries and clothing and host a blood drive. The church will have two picnics open to the public: On Tuesday, July 12 in the church parking lot and a pizza picnic on Thursday, July 14 at Dormont Park. Admission is free and they’ll have entertainment for all ages, hot dogs, ice cream, music and more. For details and specific schedule: http://mlepc.org [2]
